Village life

The Chequers

A grown-up gastropub with flagstone floors, a well-used dartboard, and a terrace looking onto the green. Dogs welcome.

The Chequers sits at the heart of the village: stylish, cosy and unpretentious, with a fire in the bar and candle-lit tables. Locally brewed real ale and lager are on tap, and the kitchen has a reputation that draws people from well beyond the village.

It is also a village room: family lunches, live music, quizzes, Christmas and New Year. The Churchill Six Pack can confirm that the prizes are real.

The house is late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, now operated by the Lionhearth Group. Book if you can; walk in if you can’t.
