The Village Hall

Built as a reading room in 1870, the hall remains the village’s meeting place: community café on Tuesdays, parties and films at the weekend, and a restoration well under way.

Henry John, 3rd Earl of Ducie, owner of Sarsden House, built the hall in 1870 as a reading room for villagers. When the earl died in 1922 his daughter Lady Eversley gifted the building to the village. That gift turned a quiet literary refuge into the hall we still use. After the Second World War it became the village hall we know.

Many local groups use the hall, including the Community Café, which meets on Tuesday mornings from 10am to 12. It is also the room for celebrations: birthdays, wedding receptions, village parties, films and the occasional concert. The main space seats up to 70, with a kitchen and a stage.

The refurbishment

Fit for the Future

After many months of planning and fundraising, Phase One of the refurbishment of our Village Hall took place during the spring of 2026. This phase included the major works of installing a new kitchen, lighting and heating, smart new bathrooms, and an upgraded electrical system. The committee / post office room has also been renovated with a new ceiling. All this work was completed in time for Teas on the Green in May.

Phase Two of the refurbishment programme is scheduled from the end of October. This will include final redecoration of the main hall and entrance areas, with new window treatments being installed.

We are very grateful to the Parish Council for the additional grants needed to help us over the line so that we can finally reveal the finished hall in time for our traditional Christmas Party.

Two long obstacles are behind us: the hall is now a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, and full title to the property has been obtained with the Land Registry, thanks to Georg at Bradley Saul in Chippy, who also sorted the Parish Council’s title to the village green, including the Langston Memorial Fountain.
